Windows 11 has a pretty funny way of making perfectly functional laptops look outdated. When I bought my first laptop in 2019, a cheap Acer Aspire, it came with Windows 10 and got me through college (and the pandemic). Seven years later, I took it out of storage and a non-stop update installed Windows 11. Things went downhill immediately, as the laptop became slow, frustrating to use, and a real test of patience. Fortunately, I gave it a second life by installing Zorin OS Lite instead of sending it to the e-waste.
After the novelty wore off, I still didn’t get any practical use out of it. Then I turned off my gaming PC before a trip, accidentally interrupting a TV series my mom was watching on Jellyfin. Yo I realized my media library I was living on the wrong machine and this old laptop became the perfect always-on home server.
An external hard drive solved two problems at once
The setup itself was pretty simple. I connected a large external hard drive to the Acer Aspire, copied my movies, TV shows, music collection, family photos and years of home videos. I then pointed Jellyfin to those folders and it was great to see them. Zorin OS Lite barely breaking a sweat as he handled the workload. After all, serving files and media over a home network doesn’t require particularly modern hardware.
The move immediately solved another problem that I hadn’t really planned for. my gaming pc I no longer have to dedicate 200GB of my SSD storage to media I rarely access directly. Those files now have a permanent new home on a Seagate external hard drive, while freeing up more space for testing games, work projects, and local LLMs. Ollama and Open WebUI.
Equally important is that I no longer have to keep my PC on while I go into the living room to watch TV at the end of the day. The laptop now simply sits in the guest room, plugged into power and a LAN cable, doing a job and doing it perfectly.
A home server does not need a powerful PC
My oldest computer turned out to be the most reliable in the house.
One thing this project taught me is that I had overestimated how much hardware a home server really needs. Streaming movies, playing music, or sharing files over a local network simply isn’t demanding enough to justify leaving a gaming PC running all day. An old laptop with a lightweight Linux distribution is more than capable of handling those jobs without feeling overloaded, especially when that’s the only job it has to do.
In fact, my desktop computer was possibly the worst machine for the job. I restart it after driver updates, turn it off when I leave the house, and regularly push it to the limit while gaming. I have had friends use my Jellyfin Server via Tailscale complain, and it simply hasn’t been reliable enough to really depend on as a 24 hour server.
The Acer Aspire, on the other hand, only consumes power, runs silently, and even has a built-in battery that doubles as a miniature UPS during brief power outages. This is how the oldest and weakest computer in my house is now as reliable as the rest. I’m also surprised how little performance matters in this new setup. The laptop is mostly limited to distributing files over the network and spends its days doing its simple job remarkably well.

A successful project opened the door to half a dozen more
Once Jellyfin was running the way I wanted, I started adding the plugins I needed to make the experience shine. That snowballed into the *arr stack, giving more shine to the server. Of course, the biggest benefit of the hands-off workflow is that I still don’t have to spend too much time physically operating a seven-year-old relic. But while I continued self-hosting at Jellyfin and Moonlight on my gaming PCThis is where the paths diverged, and now I’ve started recklessly experimenting with what I want on this Zorin-managed laptop, simply because I have nothing to lose; otherwise it would have gone in the trash.
I unsubscribed from iCloud and Google One after making this portable server my image backup through Immich.
The next additions were easy decisions. I set up automatic backups from my desktop to laptop, then installed Tailscale so I could access everything safely while traveling. Since the server already has a 2 TB dedicated hard drive that would have picked up some rot If I hadn’t taken it out of storage and connected it to this laptop, setting up Immich for image and video backup was the obvious next step. Next month, my partner and I are no longer subscribed to iCloud and Google One.
Each new service makes this laptop more useful than the last, making it the first proper home server I’ve ever owned that has no purpose other than self-hosting. AdGuard HomeSyncthing and a few other self-hosted tools are already on my list to try once the weekend hits, and the ultimate goal is to run the machine completely headless to free up even more resources.

I had no idea I’d be building a Linux-based home server when I decided to go through my storage and randomly open a laptop I hadn’t used in years. Windows 11 had all but discarded this device, pawning it off on Facebook Marketplace or consigning it to e-waste pastures.
Days later, a lightweight Linux distro and an external hard drive gave it a new purpose. Every time I come across another interesting self-hosted service, I don’t have to wonder where I’ll run it, because I already have the perfect machine waiting for me.
