iOS 27 Could Add Native Google Cast Support, Report Suggests

A new report from Bloomberg suggests that iOS 27 could add Google Cast integration, among other third-party solutions, as Apple tries to keep the EU away.

It’s already possible to use Google Cast (aka Chromecast) in iOS apps, but developers must manually integrate it into the app. iOS as a whole only supports one streaming protocol natively, and that’s Apple’s AirPlay. Therefore, third-party options like Miracast and Google Cast end up being excluded and only work on an app-by-app basis.

That may change soon.

According BloombergApple is looking to add support in iOS 27 for “third-party AirPlay streaming alternatives,” and Google Cast is mentioned by name in the report. Specifically, Apple would allow users to set alternatives as the “default solution” instead of AirPlay.

I’m told that Apple, seeking to satisfy the latest requirements of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, is adding support in iOS 27 for third-party AirPlay streaming alternatives. This means users can set external services, such as Google Cast, as the default solution for streaming videos, photos, and audio from an Apple device to a speaker or TV.

That’s great news for anyone who has invested in a solution other than Apple’s. Google Cast, widely available in many Speakers and televisions would immediately be a strong alternative to AirPlay.

That being said, like our sister site 9to5Mac points outthis is likely to be implemented only in the European Union, as Apple has not readily adopted other software-based changes imposed by the EU in other parts of the world. It would be a brilliant addition, especially for those who live in households with a mix of iPhone and Android phones – Apple doesn’t support AirPlay on Android, which almost certainly won’t change anytime soon. unless the EU gets its way – but we’ll have to wait and see how widely it will be available.
