Tony Stark’s self-sacrifice during the great battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame It meant that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had to say goodbye to one of its most popular heroes. Initially, jon favreauwho had directed Robert Downey Jr. in his first two iron man outings and co-starred with him via the MCU like Happy Hogan, I didn’t think it was the right choice. But once he saw how the film handled Stark’s death, he realized the reaction was wrong.
In a recent episode of Jimmy Kimmel live! (through the hollywood reporter) to promote his latest project on the big screen, The Mandalorian and GroguFavreau recalled of his feelings at the time. He felt protective of the character and especially his fans and shared his concerns with end of the game directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
“I talked to the Russos; I said, ‘I don’t know if people are going to like it… I don’t know, it’s really going to shock people because they were kids who grew up with that character,'” Favreau recalled. However, he soon realized that he had nothing to worry about.
“But I have to tell you, they handled it very well. And Gwyneth (Paltrow) and Robert did a wonderful job acting, and I think it added to the intensity. I think they did a wonderful job. I was wrong.”
He also said he “choked up” watching the emotional scenes, and that he’s excited for Downey to return to the MCU, albeit this time in the form of the villain Doctor Doom, in the December film. Avengers: Judgment Day.
