TL;DR

  • Code within the Google Home app for iOS refers to a possible new device called “Google Home Display.”
  • The branding is notable because Google has already shown that it is moving away from the Nest name for upcoming smart home hardware.
  • While nothing is confirmed yet, this could be our first hint at Google’s plans for a Nest Hub successor.

Google may finally be preparing a new smart display, and this time it could arrive with a very different name.

Frequent Application Detective @aaronp613 of MacRumors References to something called “Google Home Display” were spotted hidden within the code of the Google Home app for iOS. While that’s all Aaron found, the name itself is very interesting.

Instead of using the old Nest name, Google appears to be leaning once again toward the “Google Home” brand. The company’s next smart speaker also moved away from the Nest name and adopted the “Google Home Speaker“In its place, the nickname. Therefore, the brand name “Google Home Display” strongly suggests that this is a new Nest Hub successor.

Google hasn’t released a new Nest Hub since Nest Hub (2nd generation) in 2021. In recent years, many Google Home users have wondered if the company had quietly replaced the category with the pixel tabletwhich works as a smart display when docked. Google never explicitly removed Nest Hubs, but the lack of a new device has certainly made users think Google has abandoned the line.

However, Google Home product director Anish Kattukaran confirmed As of late last year, Google is still committed to smart displays. He stopped short of confirming a new device, but said the company would have more to share “soon” as the Gemini becomes more deeply integrated into the Google Home ecosystem.

Of course, there are still many things we don’t know. References in app code don’t always lead to real products, and even if this device is real, it may still be far from release.

Still, after years without a new Nest Hub or even a new Pixel tablet, this is certainly a promising development.
