A senior games buyer at a major retailer warned that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S supply will not meet demand during the November launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
The buyer, speaking anonymously to The Game Business, said that the current shortage of hardware components will prevent retailers from receiving the consoles they ordered before launch.
Microsoft has also acknowledged supply issues with Xbox hardware. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball confirmed that demand for the console exceeds supply and that production faces severe limitations.

The senior game buyer told The Game Business that due to ongoing issues with hardware component availability, they will not receive the units they want ahead of GTA.
Demand is expected to exceed supply during the year-end period. This warning highlights a trend that has been developing throughout 2026.
Component shortages, driven by AI-related memory pressures that have also increased the prices of phones, PCs and Macs, have made console manufacturing more difficult and expensive.
Retailers have ordered significant stock in anticipation of the release of GTA 6, but suppliers are unable to meet those volume requests.
Matthew Ball, Xbox’s chief strategy officer, told The Game Business that demand for the console currently exceeds supply. He explained that Xbox is putting the consoles in as many stores as possible and producing them as quickly as possible.
However, there are limitations on how quickly manufacturing can ramp up, and it’s not due to a lack of demand. While they need to do more, limitations prevent a more rapid increase in supply.
Microsoft has not provided specific production targets or detailed supply schedules beyond acknowledging these limitations.
What this means for buyers ahead of GTA 6’s release
Users planning to purchase a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S to play GTA 6 should consider purchasing before the late summer rush, when supply pressures are expected to increase.
They should also keep an eye out for restocks at major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and the platform makers’ own stores.
It is advisable to avoid third-party resale marketplaces, where reselling could drive prices well above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price as the release approaches.
Additionally, it might be worth considering the PS5 Pro, which is priced at $699 and has generally been available more consistently than the standard PS5.
Users who already own a current-gen console do not need to take any additional action to play GTA 6 when it launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Marketing push between Sony and Microsoft as GTA 6 launch nears
Both platform owners are actively positioning themselves for the launch of GTA 6. Sony updated the PS5 dashboard to promote the game and changed the look of the PlayStation app to align with the Rockstar brand.
Pre-orders now include custom PS5 splash screens. Sony has stated that GTA 6 “will play better on PS5.” Microsoft has publicly acknowledged supply limitations but continues to promote the game on Xbox. As the November launch approaches, competition between the two platforms becomes more intense.
The supply pressure on console hardware is part of a broader trend affecting the consumer electronics industry. Smartphone shipments are expected to decline by 15 percent in 2026, and the PC market is projected to decline by 11.3 percent.
Recently, Apple raised the prices of iPads and Macs, citing continued memory cost pressures. Valve also announced a significant price increase for the Steam Deck.
GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC version has not yet been confirmed. Pre-orders began on June 25, with the Standard Edition priced at $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition priced at $99.99.
