microsoft has announced that Windows 11 26H2 will be released later this year as an enablement package, part of the company’s ongoing shift toward smaller, incremental annual updates.
26H2 support will continue until October 2028 for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions. Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise versions will receive updates until October 2029.
The 26H2 update is not expected to introduce any major new features. Like Windows 11 25H2, it activates existing code in the operating system rather than providing an entirely new platform.
What is an enablement package and how are the new Windows 11 features arriving now?
Enablement packages are small, often less than 500 KB, and work by activating inactive code that is already present on the system. For users running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, upgrading to 26H2 involves a quick enablement download, a one-time reboot, and just a few minutes to install. There are no visible changes to the desktop after completing the update.
This method was introduced with Windows 11 24H2 in October 2024, which was the last traditional feature update. Since then, version numbers have advanced each year, but the underlying platform has not changed.
Microsoft now releases new features through monthly cumulative updates instead of relying on annual releases. Recent updates have introduced a low latency profile for performance tuning, support for a rolling taskbar (expected on an upcoming Patch Tuesday), unlimited extensions for pausing Windows Update, accessibility features for screen tinting, and several improvements rolled out gradually to Insider channel users.
The annual feature update has come to serve primarily as a maintenance marker that extends support timelines, rather than the primary method of delivering new features.
Hardware requirements and how Windows 11 26H1 differs from 26H2
Windows 11 26H2 does not introduce new hardware requirements. Any device that can run Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 will also support 26H2. The basic requirements remain the same:
- 4GB RAM,
- 64 GB of storage,
- 64-bit dual-core processor.
Windows 11 26H1 is a separate version that targets newer silicon platforms like Nvidia N1 and Snapdragon X2. It is based on a different platform foundation.
This update does not bring any new features to the user. For most users, it is not a significant update and is mainly relevant to those purchasing new hardware for those specific platforms.
What this means for users and organizations
For users running Windows 11 versions 24H2 or 25H2, upgrading to 26H2 will be almost invisible. The update extends the support period for the installation but does not alter the user experience.
There’s no need to prepare for a disruptive upgrade or back up your data beforehand, although regular backups are always a good idea.
For organizations, Microsoft describes the update process as a way to minimize disruption. The company stated that 26H2 “continues our focus on providing a predictable, low-disruption update experience for organizations and IT professionals.”
Microsoft has not confirmed whether the enablement package model will continue after 2026 or if it will be part of a possible Windows 11 27H2 update.
Currently, it appears that Microsoft plans to maintain its pattern of small annual updates combined with ongoing monthly feature releases, but no long-term commitment has been announced.
Users interested in the 26H2 update should check Windows Update in Settings periodically. Once available, the update will be offered through Windows Update, although the exact release date has not been confirmed beyond the target for fall 2026.
