There’s no $599 model: Microsoft is aiming for premium and ultra-premium pricing, so it’s unlikely there will be budget options.
The last few days have been something of a roller coaster for fans of Microsoft’s Surface devices. We have just recovered from the realization that Microsoft’s flagship Surface PCs cost $500 more now than when they launcheddue to increasing memory and storage costs. Now, there is apparently good news on the horizon; Microsoft is working on a new version of the Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12, although you should probably put aside any thoughts that the models are cheap.

If true, we may see an OLED Surface Laptop for the first time
As reported by Windows Centerciting “sources familiar with the plans,” we should see a new Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 this year. Unlike Microsoft’s usual patterns, this time, the Intel version (with Intel Core Ultra 3 chips) will launch first in the spring, with the Snapdragon variant (with Snapdragon X2) in the summer.
The devices will start with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but you can go up to 64GB of RAM and 2TB of storage on the more premium models. Additionally, the Surface Laptop will come with an OLED display, a first for the range of devices. However, in terms of appearance, these new versions shouldn’t be too different from the ones we know and love right now.
Unfortunately, that only leaves us with the price. Windows Central says there won’t be any $599 devices to compete with the Apple MacBook Neo, but rather it will be placed in “premium and ultra-premium pricing categories.” Given that Microsoft recently massively increased the price of its devices, it’s fair to say that cheap hardware isn’t in the cards right now.
