Microsoft Surface The week used to mean something. Fans and journalists would gather around the screens to watch a live stream or attend an in-person event where Microsoft would unveil new hardware.
Things are quite different in 2026 and I wouldn’t blame you for missing the announcements of the new Surface hardware entirely. Microsoft did not hold any events or broadcast its announcements. Instead, the company submitted details to publications and published some blog posts.
What that means is that we have new Surface hardware but without the hype.

Podcast: How do prices affect Microsoft’s new Surface PCs?
On this Windows Central podcast episodeDaniel and Zac analyze the announcements of Microsoft’s new Surface for Business and its prices.
The Surface Laptop 8 for Business is a great laptop in a vacuum. It got a 4/5 on our Surface Laptop 8 for Business review thanks to its privacy screen, crystal-clear display, and solid performance powered by the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chip inside.
But Surface can’t be seen in a vacuum. At a time when enthusiasts call the brand Surface “stagnant, overpriced, disappointing and dead.” Microsoft can’t afford to simply update its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro lines with new chips and a couple of improvements.
Last week I argued in Windows Wrap that Microsoft is rebuilding XBOX and Windows 11 while letting the Surface collect dust.
Earlier this year I described four steps to save the Surface brand. Let’s see how Microsoft has done it:
I understand that changes like this would take time. Microsoft can’t design a new Surface that innovates form factors overnight. But there are positive steps Microsoft could take today.
Microsoft could have announced the Snapdragon X and Intel versions of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices side by side. They are designed for different types of customers, so it’s not like they cannibalize each other.
Consumer-focused Surface devices are already on the way. Microsoft plans to announce them later this year. They could have just announced all the new Surface devices and specified release dates. It wouldn’t be the perfect solution, but it would have been better than what we got.
I have to say, I’m really not a fan of the way Microsoft does Surface PC launches these days. An online blog post, focused solely on business customers, is absolutely NOT the way to generate publicity for your hardware line. We know that consumer variants exist around…May 19, 2026
Consumer Surface devices should also be more affordable than commercial versions. Announcing a Surface Laptop 8, Surface Pro 12, and other more affordable PCs would reduce some of the sticker shock caused by Surface for Business devices.
Business PCs have security features and extended support that increase their prices. Companies are also more willing to pay a premium and can also get volume discounts.
More affordable consumer Surface PCs would be better received than the promise of a Surface laptop with 8 GB of RAM.
Microsoft could also at least pretend to be excited about these devices. The blog posts and specs being sent out are a far cry from an event on stage.
If I could send a message to Microsoft and its decision makers, I would say: “show some pride in your work.” It’s pretty obvious that’s not happening right now.
Shopping with Sean
Until Microsoft comes out with a Surface device that I can recommend over the competition, I’m leaving the Surface out of my purchase recommendation here. He Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Gen. 11) It’s the kind of machine that’s thin, light, and lasts all day. ought be doing.
Even with the new Surface Laptop 8 for business and Surface Pro 12 for business, the Yoga Slim 7x is still a better option. Maybe that will change when Microsoft unveils its consumer-focused Surface hardware, but we don’t know now because the company decided to stagger its announcements.
