This year marks the tenth anniversary of Studio Bones’ anime adaptation of ONEThe supernatural coming-of-age series, mafia psychosis 100. And to celebrate the occasion, the creatives who brought anime to life visited Anime Expo to remember the The humble beginnings of the series back in 2016. and his thoughtful ending in 2023.
Saving money, of all the anime I’ve covered at Anime Expo this year, I’m especially partial to mafia psychosis 100. In fact, in my Kotaku list that ranks the best anime of the decade, mafia psychosis 100 hit the top of the rankings as my absolute favorite show. And I’m not alone in that. The series has great richness own memes. The key among them is mentor Reigen Arataka’s fame as the Tumblr Sexy Man, baptized by undertale creator Toby Fox Sans x Mob Psycho fanfiction. And who can forget when? Mob’s placid, bowl-cut face made headlines across America in the funniest way imaginable.?
mafia psychosis 100 is a show that contains multitudes, not only for the neurodivergent people among us, but also as a masterpiece with lush sakuga and resonant themes about becoming yourself. It’s also a lot of fun, as you’d expect from the delightfully absurd mind behind it. One hit man.
Likewise, it was a great honor to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the anime at Anime Expo by talking with the director. Yuzuru Tachikawaactor Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama This is Setsuo.and actor Reigen Arataka Takahiro Sakurai about what the series has meant to them a decade later.

Isaiah Colbert, io9: This year marks the 10th anniversary of mafia psychosis 100. Looking back, what does it mean to each of you to reach this milestone and when did you first realize you were working on a series that would leave such a lasting impact on the anime community?
Yuzuru Tachikawa: The difference between my understanding of this now and what it used to be is a huge difference. When we were originally doing the anime adaptation, what we did was start with a promotional video; we would call it PV. It was a short video that I had to show to fans of the original manga and potential future fans so that we could find creators to work on it with us.
But the reaction, and here I am thinking, “Okay, people will see this and say, ‘Oh yeah, I want to work on that. I want to be a part of that. I want to be a staff member on that project.'” But the reality is that when we released the promo video, a lot of people saw it and said, “Oh, that looks like a challenge. Oh, that looks hard, and I don’t think I want to work on that because it looks like a big challenge.” So it was difficult for us to find many staff members to work on it at first because of that.
Once we finished the first season, we had some time between that to grow, the merch was released, and then we got picked up by a few different magazines. When we got to the second season, there were more people saying, “Oh yeah, I want to work on this.” It was much easier to get staff members to work on that project at that time. And that’s when I realized that the reach of this would be quite large because we were able to attract people.
Now ten years have passed. New products are launched monthly. And now they call us to participate in panels in the United States. I think about it every day, but it wasn’t always like that.
Setsuo this: For me personally, this title was the first of many things. Until now, he had not worked on many things for which he was recognized as a voice actor. But on the other hand, if you asked me when I realized this had a big impact, it was pretty much along the way. At some point, I just knew. But the moment I realized that was mainly when someone said, “Oh wow, are you the voice of Mob?” That was the first time for me. Until that moment, it hadn’t been anyone’s voice that anyone could recognize. But I think it’s fantastic to have been able to be. I felt grateful to be able to participate in something that had a big impact.
If I hadn’t been cast in this role, I think I would have quit voice acting. After all these years, for me, mafia psychosis 100 It is also the title that allowed me to continue being a voice actor. It was a continuation of that for me and I appreciate it.
Takahiro Sakurai: For me, I wanted people to get out of it what I got out of it. What I mean by this is that I came to this title after having a considerable career. Of course, I liked the visual aspect and I liked the design. But there were also the words and lines of the characters that impacted me, that impacted me differently. I felt like this was a title for me. I felt like this was a story for me. I felt like it represented my own emotions in some way. I felt like it was representative of me and said things I couldn’t put into words.
So I wanted other people to take that away from him too. Because I worked on this title, because I was a part of this, other people can see it and feel the same way. Feel like, “Wow, this says something. It speaks to me” or “I can relate to this” in a way that maybe you wouldn’t if I hadn’t been in it.
But I remembered the impact of today’s story on the panel on stage. The story itself from the original manga writer, ONE, his work is fantastic. And that we had a fantastic director to work with on this anime. I was reminded of all that at today’s panel on stage.
mafia psychosis 100 streams on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Netflix.
