Nothing’s CMF series of phones has released two models so far and, at least for now, it won’t be getting a third as the rising cost of materials has essentially left the series dead in the water.
The CMF Phone series has been creating budget-focused smartphones which, as we noted in our hands-on coverage, have been very good values.
But, as has become clearRising component costs, especially RAM, are affecting budget devices more than anything else. And, as a result, the CMF phone is dead, at least for this year.
Nothing co-founder and the man behind the CMF Phone series, Akis Evangelidis, confirmed on Twitter/X that the upcoming CMF Phone launch has been cancelled, which partly explains:
We were working on a successor, but with memory prices at the current level, we can’t build a phone that feels like a real step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF. As a result, we have decided not to launch a new CMF phone this year.
In a later response, he add than release a device with exactly the same specifications as CMF Phone 2 Pro It would cost about 50% more in the current market. The CMF Phone 2 Pro has out of stock for quite some time, presumably due to the inflated cost of materials.
This comes just days after Nothing CEO Carl Pei explained that RAM, memory, is now the most expensive component in the construction of a smartphone, that could They vary by device, but it’s still worth noting, as Pei says it exceeds the price of the processor and display and can account for “more than 50% of the total hardware bill.”
Since RAMgeddon has no end in sight, it seems unlikely that the CMF phone will return anytime soon.
