OpenAI launches Health on ChatGPT for US users, connecting Apple health and medical records

OpenAI is launching Health in ChatGPT for US users, allowing connections to Apple Health and compatible medical records so ChatGPT can view health information during conversations.

According to OpenAI, connected medical records, Apple Health data, and related conversations are not used for model training or advertising.

The feature is now available to US users aged 18 and over who are signed in on the web and iOS on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, which can be accessed from the ChatGPT sidebar.

Currently, Health is not available in the Codex. Users can still ask health questions without connecting any data.

What health does on ChatGPT and the models behind health conversations

With the user’s permission, ChatGPT can access connected information such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep, and activity. You can compare new results to previous tests, summarize changes since the last appointment, or relate sleep, activity, and workouts to a routine. OpenAI says this feature aims to reduce repetitive data entry and support, not replace, the care of medical professionals.

OpenAI reports that more than 300 million people use ChatGPT for health-related questions each week, often with relevant information distributed across patient portals, registries, apps, and wearable devices.

Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced a dedicated health experience for a limited group of users, who required a separate space in ChatGPT.

OpenAI notes that more than 70% of health-related conversations occurred outside of this space, creating the ability to reference health information in all conversations.

The Health section in the sidebar remains the place to connect and manage information, view trends, explore synced records, and review past health conversations.

OpenAI claims that GPT-5.5 Instant, available on the free plan, is better at recognizing when urgent care may be needed, requesting relevant context, explaining uncertainty, and simplifying complex information.

GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid users, is described as OpenAI’s most advanced health model, with improved performance on tasks requiring complex reasoning.

OpenAI collaborates with hundreds of clinicians to develop health scenarios and assessment rubrics for accuracy, safety, communication, context awareness, completeness, and escalation.

The company reports that all GPT-5.6 models outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, its assessment for challenging health tasks.

OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT can still make errors and is not a substitute for qualified medical professionals, encouraging users to verify important information with a healthcare provider.

Privacy and Data Controls: How to Connect and Access Health Information

OpenAI claims that Health is built with layered security and privacy safeguards. All ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, and connected information in Health receives additional encryption.

Connected medical records and Apple Health information, as well as conversations that use them, are excluded from base model training and ad targeting, regardless of the user’s model training settings.

Conversations that do not use this data follow the user’s standard model training settings, adjustable in Settings and then Data Controls.

By default, ChatGPT asks for permission before using connected records to customize responses. Users can approve each request or choose to always allow access, which turns off prompts, by adjusting Settings in Plugins and Health.

Users can turn off health information at any time in Health in Accounts. OpenAI claims that data from a disconnected source is removed from its systems within 30 days, although information already in conversation history remains until those conversations are deleted.

Memories are not created directly from connected medical records or Apple Health information. Users can use temporary chat or disable memory in Memory Settings.

OpenAI states that before ChatGPT takes action on another connected plugin that may reveal health information, additional safeguards verify that the exchange matches the request, and some sensitive actions require confirmation.

Users who want answers based on their own data can connect Apple Health, compatible medical records from US hospital systems, One Medical or Function Health.

  1. Open Health in the sidebar or More menu in ChatGPT, select “Get Started,” and follow the guided connection process.
  2. Allow the information to sync, which may take a few minutes. You can connect additional accounts during or after syncing. Confirm that data sharing with Apple Health is enabled, as ChatGPT can only use what those apps make available through Apple Health. Some proprietary sheet music may not transfer.
  3. Review related conditions and medications, delete any that are no longer relevant, and add missing details, including family health history.
  4. Update outdated entries, as connected information may not always be up to date, and verify important details with the original source.

Once synced, users can ask questions anywhere in ChatGPT and add @Health to a message to explicitly request health context.

Health on ChatGPT is now available to US users 18+ on the web and on iOS on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. OpenAI has not announced availability outside the US, support on Codex, or an Android release schedule.

Connected information may not always be complete or up-to-date. OpenAI advises users to verify important details with the original source and consult a healthcare provider to make medical decisions.
