Opera has added a browser connector feature for Opera One and Opera GX. This allows external AI tools, including ChatGPT and claudioto access the content of the open tab directly through the browser session. The feature is currently available on Opera’s Early Bird test channel at no cost. It uses the model context protocol to bind supported AI services to the active browsing session.
This is based on the MCP technology that Opera first introduced in Opera Neon, its subscription-based AI browser. Browser Connector extends the same capabilities to Opera One and Opera GX, both of which are free and widely used.
What the Opera Browser Connector can do
Once connected, a compatible AI tool can read the text content of open tabs and use that information when answering questions or creating summaries. The feature also allows AI to take screenshots of open pages, allowing it to analyze visual content such as charts, graphs or product lists that would otherwise have to be described manually.
The connection eliminates the need to copy and paste page content or links into an AI chat window. Users who work on multiple tabs during research or comparison tasks can allow the AI to reference those tabs directly.
How to enable the browser connector and what to know about privacy
Browser Connector can be accessed through Opera settings. When you open settings and search for AI Services, you’ll find an option to install the feature and connect supported tools like ChatGPT or Claude to your active session.
Enabling the browser connector allows the connected AI service to see the content of open tabs. Users should check which tabs are open before connecting an AI service, as the connected tool can read all accessible page content. Browser Connector is currently in Early Bird mode, which is Opera’s pre-release testing channel, and has not yet been released to the standard version of the browser. Opera has not provided a timeline for a full launch.
