Like other platforms, Plex no longer offers free remote playback options. To watch away from home, you’ll need a Plex Pass ($7 per month, $70 per year, or $250 for life) as the server owner, or a Remote Monitoring Pass ($2 per month, or $20 per year).
The subscription requirement first came to mobile devices, Roku players, and desktop. On March 23, Plex began enforcing the policy for consoles and other TV operating systems, including LG, Samsung, and Vizio TVs. The change is expected to reach all television platforms by the end of 2026.
The overhaul includes useful changes, including faster navigation, better use of space, centralized account information, and artwork editing directly from the TV. Music is supported on this version of Fire TV, but Plex warns that photo libraries are not available right away and that it will restore support “as soon as we can.”
Why does Plex limit remote streaming?
Plex was upfront when it announced remote playback restrictions in March 2025. The company said it “needed more resources” to develop its vision for personal media playback, including new features and support for existing capabilities.
At that time, the brand drew up a roadmap that it used to justify the need for subscriptions. Plex Pass subscribers would get better filtering of kid-friendly content, while server owners would get a custom app that would offer better user management. Plex also promised an open programming framework for integrating servers into other products and services.
However, the measure generated criticism from users who were now forced to pay for a function that was previously free. There were also complaints about an uncomfortable user experience at first.
As before, the easiest solution besides leaving Plex is to subscribe to Remote Watch Pass. This allows for remote play from anywhere without having to pay extra for Plex Pass features you don’t necessarily need, like media downloads, more server controls, and intro skipping.
