While mid-range Android phones have gotten a lot better over the years, lag spikes are still remarkably common. With its new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chips, Qualcomm says the lag should be reduced along with some other improvements.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 are the latest versions of Qualcomm’s mid-range chipsets. These are the types of chips you’d expect to find in something like a Moto G, Nothing Phone A-series, etc.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 features a 2+6-core configuration consisting of two performance cores up to 2.4 GHz and six efficiency cores up to 2.0 GHz. The chip supports FHD+ displays up to 144 Hz, sub-6 GHz 5G networks, Wi-Fi 5, and cameras up to 108 MP. Some notable updates this year include the GPU, which Qualcomm claims has 77% better performance compared to the last generation and supports 90Hz gaming. On the networking side, it supports Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) 5G + 5G/4G connectivity.
As for the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, the chip has a 4+4-core configuration with four performance cores up to 2.6 GHz and four efficiency cores up to 2.0 GHz. It supports Wi-Fi 7, FHD+ displays up to 144 Hz, and cameras up to 200 MP. It also supports AI night vision for the camera and Bluetooth 6.0. Qualcomm highlights support for Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, which enables “smooth and long-lasting gameplay” from a 21% more powerful GPU.
Qualcomm also notes that both chips feature “Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI,” a new chipset-level improvement that Qualcomm says will offer “lag-free navigation.” Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 benefits from 20% faster app launches and 18% less screen stuttering, while Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 sees larger improvements of 43% and 25%, respectively.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 will appear first on Honor and Redmi devices, while Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will appear on Oppo, Realme, and Redmi devices.
