What you need to know
- Samsung announced UFS 5.0 storage and claimed that it has achieved write speeds of up to 9.5 GB/s and read speeds of up to 10.8 GB/s.
- The company claims that the power efficiency of UFS 5.0 increased by 40% compared to the 4.1 solution, and is 16.7% smaller.
- Samsung also claims that UFS 5.0 upgrades the AI on the device, providing faster response times and lower latency, and intends to enter mass production by the fourth quarter of 2026.
The next generation of phone storage is on the way. Samsung announced the “fastest” solution for mobile phones, which means its next Galaxy series could have it.
This week, Samsung announced the UFS 5.0 storage solution for mobile devices. The latest memory standard can reportedly reach “up to 10.8 gigabytes per second” (read speed). The company adds that its development raises UFS 5.0 writing speeds up to 9.5 GB/s. Samsung touts that its 5.0 solution is about “twice as fast” as UFS 4.1 storage, which you’ll find in the OnePlus 15.
Power efficiency has skyrocketed with UFS 5.0 by “more than” 40%. What’s more, Samsung was able to minimize its storage by ~16.7%, which means slim phones aren’t going away anytime soon. Samsung claims this advancement is not only a boon for phones, but smaller storage solutions mean better apps on wearables and XR devices.
While this aims to benefit phones and more, Samsung is looking at another key aspect of mobile devices today: AI. UFS 5.0 is said to facilitate “much faster storage and processing of big data” for on-device AI. The reduced latency and faster response times of LLMs (large language models) will also see improvements. With the June announcement, Samsung says it aims to start mass production of UFS 5.0 storage in the fourth quarter of 2026. It will produce it in various sizes, up to 1TB of storage.
Much like its applications outlook, Samsung intends for UFS 5.0 to be used in flagship phones, hoping to meet next-gen demand/growth.
Everyone loves good storage
Samsung’s announcement and intentions for UFS 5.0 are interesting when think about those Galaxy S27 rumors. Reports in mid-April claimed that Samsung was changing its thinking and moved on to integrate UFS 5.0 into the Galaxy S27 series. However, while intriguing (and interesting now after the full reveal), the update may not improve the entire series. Apparently, UFS 5.0 will only arrive for “some” of Samsung’s S27 series.
It’s still unclear which devices would see it, but we at least hope the S27 Ultra has it. Samsung claims in its post that it plans to mass produce UFS 5.0 later this year, but pricing remains a concern (according to rumors). We have seen how The telephone market has been trending.. Samsung reportedly has a lot to consider before applying this solution to its upcoming phones.
Android Central’s opinion
The read and write speeds of a hard drive are crucial when it comes to computers. I never want my PC to be left behind during a download or while transferring files. It’s the same feeling when it comes to phones. Why buy an expensive phone if it lacks a storage solution? If it is slow and takes too long in the basic processes? This update is a double whammy, as Samsung not only speeds up the usability of your memory, impacts apps, and more, but also helps AI (Galaxy AI more, anyone?).
