Security researcher Andy Nguyen has shared a method to run linux in certain PlayStation 5 units, along with configuration instructions available on GitHub.
This is a previous demo where Nguyen showed off Ubuntu running on the console, with Grand Theft Auto V achieving 60 frames per second with ray tracing on and Spider-Man running at 1440p at 60fps. The modification is temporary. Restarting the console erases the Linux environment, so users must reload it every time the system is turned on.
PS5 compatibility requirements with Linux
The exploit is only effective on disc-based PS5 models running firmware versions 3.xx and 4.xx. Does not support systems updated to firmware 5.xx. Nguyen mentions that support for firmware versions 1.xx and 2.xx could be added in the future, but it is not currently a priority.
What works and what doesn’t in the PS5 Linux setup
The implementation includes adjusted VRAM allocation and working fan controls for stable operation. Screen output is supported 1080p, 1440p and 4Kwith refresh rates currently limited to 60Hz. Nguyen says 120Hz support may be added in the future.
Network connectivity requires a workaround after boot. Users may need to power cycle the WLAN adapter to restore Internet access after startup. These limitations reflect the initial state of driver support for hardware not originally designed to run Linux.
Nguyen is exploring a shutdown option that would put the console into sleep mode rather than shutting it down completely, allowing Linux to reboot without repeating the entire setup process.
Project Scope and Limitations
Nguyen says there’s no risk of bricking the console, which lowers the barrier for users wanting to try the method. The project focuses specifically on running Linux and does not open the door to the broader homebrew software or game backup capabilities seen in previous PlayStation hacking scenes.
Tools and instructions are available on GitHub. The project is described as best suited for users who are already comfortable working in Linux environments.
