Spotify will now allow subscribers to use natural language to ask questions about their listening history, make playback requests, and more. Here are the details.
Talk to Spotify launches in beta today
Spotify announced today (via Engadget) that “eligible Premium users will see new ways to talk to Spotify in the Home and Playing views on mobile devices.”
With the new feature, currently in beta, users can talk or type with an in-app AI assistant that leverages their listening history and broader knowledge of artists, albums, songs, podcasts, audiobooks and more.
Below are some sample questions. Spotify says that users can ask:
- He plays some artists I haven’t heard before.
- What is the inspiration behind Dua Lipa’s radical optimism?
- When did I first hear this song?
- What genres do I like lately?
- What other books has this author written?
- What other podcasts has this guest been on?
Spotify says the feature can maintain context across multiple requests, allowing users to refine what they want through a more natural exchange:
Ask Spotify to “play some artists I haven’t heard before” and then continue shaping the mood with as much or as little direction as you want. You can say “Add some Bad Bunny” and then ask to limit it to “just his recent stuff” or “make it more upbeat.” And when you like what you hear, ask Spotify to “save this song,” “add this to my queue,” or “follow this artist.”
According to the company, Talk to Spotify is “gradually rolling out in beta to Premium users 18+ in the US, Ireland, and Sweden on English-language iOS and Android devices.” The company adds that user feedback will be important in shaping the experience and usefulness of the feature in the future.
