This month marks 20 years since the founding of Spotify. Since it began operating in April 2006, the platform has become today dominant force in music streaming and has completely changed the music industry.
Some of those notable changes have included audiobooks, Spotify Wrapped year-end recaps that nearly every company in every industry has started copying, and, in recent years, a controversial introduction of artificial intelligence in the music streaming experience.
Now, for the first time in its 20-year history, Spotify announced its internal data on the 20 most played podcasts, audiobooks and music since the creation of the platform. The results may not be entirely shocking. For example, the most reproduced artist of the last 20 years is none other than Taylor Swift.
But there are some surprises and potential setbacks, Beyoncé perhaps chief among them. Not only did the hugely popular Beyoncé fail to make the top 20 most streamed artists, but none of her songs or albums were in the respective top 20. K-pop, a subgenre with a huge and very dedicated fandom, also got just one nod with the boy band BTS.
According to the data, the most played album of all time is Bad Bunny’s “Un Verano Sin Ti,” and the most played song is “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd
On the non-music streaming side, the most played podcast of all time was The Joe Rogan Experience, and the top audiobook was Sara J. Maas A court of roses and thorns.
