Yesterday, Valve announced the details of the launch of the steam controlleralong with assurances that your Steam Frame and Machine gadgets They are still on track for a future release. Steam Deck 2 has yet to receive firm updates, but Valve confirmed that it remains in development.
In a conversation with IGNValve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais said, “We’re working hard on it” when asked about a second-generation Steam Deck. However, there is no clear release window and additional comments suggest that a release may still be a long way off.
Griffais said: “And obviously every step of the way, if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and the Steam Machine to the Steam Deck, to everything we’re announcing and launching this year. And we expect Steam Deck 2 to be pretty much the same, where a lot of what we’re doing here will be learnings that will be developed.”
The original Steam Deck is now four years old and launched in early 2022. Many of Valve’s rivals have released several generations of handheld gaming devices since the original Steam Deck, but Valve is holding its own.
A year and a half after the first-generation Steam Deck, Valve updated the handheld with a mid-generation update, the OLED Steam Coverwith an improved screen.
griffais said IGN in November 2025, “We are not interested in getting to a point where we have 20, 30 or even 50% more performance with the same battery life.” He also said Valve was planning improvements to deliver what it called truly next-generation performance.
Even further back, at the end of 2023, Valve said The edge that a Steam Deck was at least a couple of years away, leading some to speculate that we may have seen a new handheld late last year or in 2026. While Griffais’ latest comments don’t confirm that we won’t see a Steam Deck 2 as soon as this year, it appears development isn’t far enough along to begin predicting release dates.
