Bunkum didn’t set the box office on fire like Obsession and Backrooms They currently are, but the film remains one of the low-budget horror success stories of 2026. And if you missed it in theaters, you’ll soon be able to experience its eerie wonders at home. The third feature film from writer-director Damian McCarthy (after Warning and Rarity) stars Adam Scott as an American writer on a strange Irish vacation, and arrives on digital starting tomorrow, June 2.
Physical media collectors will have to wait until August 11 for the release of the Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD combo and DVD, which comes with some intriguing-sounding extras. Along with commentary from McCarthy, who is sure to tell some fun stories about filming a movie that takes place primarily in a single location filled with many compressed spaces (including a locked basement, dark rooms, an elevator, and a dumbwaiter), there will be a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of Bunkumas well as the short film Jack the donkey, the family favorite.
If you’ve seen the movie, you’ve already seen Jack in action and know his importance to Scott’s character, an author named Ohm Bauman whose successful career has hit a snag as he struggles to finish the final book in his best-selling trilogy. His favorite distraction is taking a trip to the hotel in rural Ireland where his late parents spent their honeymoon. He is there to scatter her ashes, which he does before quickly being dragged into some very distressing and extremely witchy local folklore. The hotel houses creatures both supernatural and all-too-human, with a nod to the glowand Ohm becomes a detective of sorts as he works through his own emotional demons.
When watching at home, make sure you have the room as dark as possible to maximize BunkumIt is generating highly effective fear and shocks. You can rent or buy. Bunkum starting June 2 on all usual digital platforms; physical release follows August 11.
