
Tesla has said Cybercab employee rides will begin soon at its Texas factory. The ad came with a clip of a gold Cybercab, with its butterfly doors open and no steering wheel or pedals, driving alone through the exit parking lot. Combinable reports.
Keep the weather in mind. Tesla said rides will “begin soon,” not that they have, and several outlets have already reported otherwise.
That’s the entire ad. No route, no fleet size, and no information on whether trips are on public roads or entirely owned by Tesla.
What we are really seeing
Removing the frame, a car was driving alone in a parking lot. Autonomous vehicles have been doing this on private land for more than a decade.
Giga Texas is a huge site with real internal roads, so a real campus shuttle would mean something. A circuit through the exit lot would not do it.
Tesla has not said which one it is. Electrek, which broke down the announcement, concluded that it couldn’t know either.
Which is definitely not what people are expecting. The Cybercab has not joined Tesla’s paid robotaxi fleet in Austin, which is still powered by Model Y vehicles.
The hardware is not the problem.
It’s worth being fair to Tesla here, because the manufacturing is really impressive. Its boxless assembly process works and the Cybercab is the most efficient vehicle the company has built.
There are reportedly over a hundred finished Cybercabs on the Giga Texas lot. Tesla can make these things.
The bottleneck is the software, and it is brutal. Without a steering wheel or pedals, there is no reverse, so if the autonomous driving system fails, the vehicle simply cannot be driven.
You can survive that by walking in a parking lot. It is a different proposal on public roads.
The record so far
Tesla’s autonomy numbers remain difficult. TNW has reported that its Austin robotaxis It crashes about every 57,000 miles, about four times worse than the average human..
The scale gap is even starker. Tesla has 42 vehicles authorized for self-driving rides in Texas vs. Waymo’s 577which is a matter of public record rather than opinion.
However, progress is real and worth saying clearly. Tesla began road engineering testing of the production Cybercab in Austin in late June, with a safety monitor in the passenger seat, and now executes robotaxis in Miami without any security monitor.
The story that matters
This is what was buried under the video. On July 9, two days before the clip surfaced, the NHTSA administrator said the agency would “absolutely” consider eliminating the rule requiring self-driving vehicles to have a steering wheel and manual controls.
That is the limitation that has kept Cybercab in a legal gray area. A car without controls is difficult to meet federal standards written under the assumption that a human might need to take control.
Dismantling is already underway. Washington has proposed eliminating brake pedal requirement for autonomous vehiclesand it is now also weighing the steering wheel rule.
From that point of view, Tesla’s strategy suddenly makes sense. It has pointedly refused to apply for individual exemptions, which are capped at 2,500 vehicles a year, betting instead that the rules themselves would change.
So far, that bet is paying off. Musk has been explicit that Cybercab achieves scale with broad regulatory approval, not waivers.
Why does the parking video exist?
A company that mass produces a vehicle it cannot yet legally or reliably deploy must show movement. A golden Cybercab gliding through the factory doing something, anything, is movement.
It’s not dishonest, exactly. It’s simply a much smaller milestone than the reaction suggests, and Tesla left the framework suitably vague.
The serious test has not changed. Take a Cybercab carrying paying passengers on Austin’s public roads, with no one in the front seat.
Until then, the most important thing that happens to this vehicle is not to be filmed in a parking lot. It is being registered in the Federal Register.
