It is the end of an era. Nothing announces before the US holiday that your original phone has gotten its final update.
in a community post, Nothing officially closed the curtain on its first phone, as its latest supported software update has been pushed out to users. The final patch is quite light. Nothing indicates that users can expect “general improvements” and bug fixes (pretty standard stuff). It is also rolling out “general system stability” updates and the July 2026 security patch, concluding four years of security fixes.
If you have a Phone 1, you are unique. Nothing looks back on the device’s achievements, noting that it first debuted with Android 12 and that its final OS update brought it to Android 15. The Phone 1 not only began our journey with Nothing, presenting us with “ideas around a cleaner, more intentional smartphone experience, from the Glyph interface and dot-matrix design language to a more focused version of Android.”
Nada attributes his design philosophy to the Phone 1, as the lessons learned from it continue to shape his software and phones. To celebrate, the publication adds that software marketing team member, RohitHe will return to the Phone 1 for a month to share his experience with it in 2026 and see how it performs.
It all started in 2022
If we’re talking four years of updates, that takes us back to 2022. The teasers said that Nothing’s first phone “coming soon” in summer 2022, and there It was a huge exaggeration. around him. For the sake of this post, I refer to our readers. You could say that ~80% of our readers were “definitely interested” or curious about the Nothing Phone 1. About 19% said they were not interested in the device, but not everything is for everyone.
Nothing had really been inserted in a market strongly dominated by Apple and Samsung. It wasn’t easy, but here we are. The device’s Glyph Lighting system was the star in trailers that showed the phone in full shadow. What’s more, Nothing’s head of design, Tom Howard, said the chassis clearlythat allowed us to see its interior, was because “they really wanted to bring the inside out, and that meant working with the engineers to start from first principles.”
As we move things closer to 2026, we’ve been seeing people in TikTok abandons its iPhones for the Nothing Phoneor at least think about doing so. Perhaps this moment is significant. Nothing’s OG device is no more (for updates), as it heralds a new era: the phone nothing 4b.
Android Central’s opinion
Nothing was interesting four years ago and it remains so now. I’m a gamer and you could say that every time a gamer sees bright lights, it catches their attention. To that I would say you are absolutely right (for me, at least). My lame jokes aside, Nothing’s phones have always had a different aesthetic compared to the rest of the industry. There are risks. It’s what differentiates them. Even their operating system is something different which helps their phones stand on their own.
