The Cannes Film Festival is currently taking place, which means we’re getting a taste of What movies await us? this year and potentially next. On the genre front, a really promising one seems to be Hope, which has just received its first trailer.
Directed by Na Hong-jin (the lament), the new film takes place in Hope Harbor, a remote village near a heavily fortified demilitarized zone. Local chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) goes to investigate a possible appearance of a tiger in the area, only to discover that it is not actually a tiger. Instead, it turns out to be an alien: several of them, and they’re chasing and killing anyone they see. Soon, the entire city depends on each other to survive and find out what these aliens want with them, if anything. Along with Jung-min, Zo In-Sung, Jung Ho-yeon, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender complete the cast.
Hope screened for the Cannes critics in attendance on Sunday night, and the reception at the time of writing has been generally positive. It looks like it’s great on a pure action and creature feature level, but when it comes time to show what the aliens really are, the visual effects may not be up to the task. Since it’s not supposed to hit theaters until the fall, it’s possible the effects will improve by then. But the impressions are there if you want to look for them, and if you want to just ignore all that and let the trailers do their job, that’s fine too.
