The highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI will cost more than other AAA games



This is also due to the awareness that reach, fidelity and scale are differentiators for large studios and publishers, as the barrier to entry for creating (although not necessarily making money with) smaller games continues to fall due to better development tools and other factors.

On the one hand, you could argue that the $60 or $70 price tag simply isn’t practical for a single-player game with the budget and scope of GTA6. However, that also assumes that the initial purchase is the only source of income for the game. Although the title will be released as a single-player only, it is expected to get a robust multiplayer service with subscriptions, in-game purchases, and more, so the initial purchase is definitely not the game’s only source of income.

Demand for this game is so high that many players will probably be willing to pay the relatively high launch price.

Note that this doesn’t necessarily portend an $80 price for all future AAA games. At least for the immediate future, other games in this category will likely launch at $70. Although we will see how long it stays like this.

The industry has already been experimenting with a price range that reflects the level of investment for each game. For example, AA games (titles with modern 3D graphics but with a smaller scope and without the ambition to go further in a competitive way) are often released at $50.

GTA6 is scheduled to launch on current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles on November 19, with download preloads beginning on November 12. The retail version of the game will also go on sale on November 12, so those who want to buy the physical box won’t have to wait for a huge download on release day. A PC version is expected, but no date has been given yet.
