The Linux community’s next big fight is no longer about Wayland; it’s about whether AI belongs in your distribution


If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a newcomer to Linux, it’s that people will argue that their distribution is the best. Recent debates have focused on X11 versus Wayland, which distro supports which, which display technology is best, etc. But now a new debate is emerging: does AI have a place in a Linux distribution?

Some Linux groups are cautiously embracing AI…

Heavy emphasis on the word ‘cautiously’

There are a handful of big players in the “yes” camp. The most important includes the people working on the Linux kernel itself, which has recently given the green light to the use of artificial intelligence tools. People can submit AI-generated code and use agents to check for bugs, but Only if they take responsibility for everything they present. and label it correctly.

Given Linus Torvalds’ attitude toward poorly written code, people who submit vibration-coded patches will get into trouble. However, it does mean that there has been an avalanche of bug fixes by AI agents, something Torvalds has called the “new normal.”

Given how harsh Linus Torvalds can be on talented, veteran programmers, anyone submitting vibration-coded patches will be quickly removed. However, the bug reporting part has been a little trickier for Torvalds to manage. Since people used AI agents to detect errors, Linux maintainers have been inundated with reports.

Not only that, but some people are submitting bug reports through secure channels, presumably because they believe the fixes the AI ​​agents found are a top priority. Unfortunately, they are usually very minor and can be declared publicly without obstructing security channels.

Another big player is Canonical, which has said it is willing to implement AI features in Ubuntu with some caveats. For one thing, you won’t load the distribution with useless tools; instead, it will focus on AI tools that focus on accessibility and ease of use. The tools will be open source and delivered as Snaps, so people can delete them if they don’t want them.

Not everyone is a fan

In the “no” camp, we see a mix of distribution developers and Linux users expressing disdain for the practice. In Fedora, the community has accepted the code created by AIbut above all because it is impossible to ban it completely. Otherwise, the community is not very enthusiastic about allowing AI to take hold.

For example, there was a plan to implement an “AI Developer Desktop” within Fedora. This would have provided users with a fully configured operating system designed to run and develop AI agents.

However, the community voted to close the initiative after their patience had already been tested with the assignment of AI-generated code. Fedora gave its blessings to anyone who wanted to make their own version of AI, but it wasn’t going to make an official one.

Linked to Canonical’s position, Tuxedo OS announced that it was getting rid of Ubuntu and move to the core technology of the distribution, Debian. Part of the reason for the move was a dislike for Snaps, but the official statement also raised a dislike for Canonicals’ recent focus on AI tools and a desire to separate itself from that.

The battle will be fought in the way appropriate for Linux: through tribalism

Not so much a “battle” but a “live and let live” mantra

Does this mean the end of the Linux community as a whole, creating a schism so big it will never recover? Well, no. If schisms like this were enough to destroy the Linux community, it would have died decades ago. The debate over AI tools is just another point of discourse in a niche that has thrived in discourse all this time.

So what willpower we see? Well, I predict that as AI tools mature and distributions reveal their attitude towards them, we will see users adopt a stance for or against AI. If they like AI, they will use an AI distribution; If they don’t, they will use one that doesn’t. If they like a distro, but its creators have an opinion that is contrary to theirs about AI, they will make a change based on their mentality.

Despite that, I think it will be a central topic of debate in future discussions. When people recommend distributions, I think there’s a good chance that their AI adoption plan will become a deal-breaker. And as these tools become more powerful, they will only amplify the discourse even more.

X11 vs. Wayland is old news; now is the time for AI

Linux develops based on what people consider to be true, and the implementation of artificial intelligence tools will become another factor to consider. It will be interesting to see how most approach these new AI features, if at all.
