It’s been more than a year since Apple introduced its latest Basic iPadPowered by A16 chipset. The company is likely to launch a new version with an A18 chip in the next few monthsbut there is a more important question to answer: what will they call it?
For a long time, Apple had been counting the iPad base model with a generation number, up to the 10th generation iPad with A14 chip. The next version removed the numbers entirely and was branded simply as the iPad (A16). That makes the performance clear for consumers, but still, the entry-level iPad has always had a naming crisis.
With the MacBook Neo, Apple took a clear stance and avoided leaving it nameless. Many had speculated that it would simply be called ‘MacBook’ without a suffix, as the company had done so for many years before.
In a recent Interview with Tom’s Guide With John Ternus and Greg Joswiak while talking about the name of the MacBook Neo and why it wasn’t just called ‘MacBook’, Joz made the following comment:
Yeah. I mean, look, you could even argue. Did you just call it MacBook? You know, that’s what some people expected when we were working on this. And doing so would have left him without an identity in the first place. So, we wanted to give it an identity. Um, and we wanted something short and snappy, something that fit with the Air and Pro, but we also wanted something that conveyed their newness. And Neo literally means new, right? Or reinvention. And as we talked about, this is the reinvention of a laptop, a low-priced, high-value laptop. For us, Neo was the perfect name.
The next iPad
With these comments, it seems almost certain that Apple is done with vague and unclear naming schemes for its core products. macbook neo It’s a clear sign, and if you want to go back further, there’s the iPhone 16e (and 17e), which ditches the traditional SE moniker.
Many had loved that naming scheme, but ultimately it didn’t give a clear indication of where the product fits in the range. For that reason, the next iPad could very well be called iPad Neo.
Now, there is a key element that gives a whole to this theory: the following iPad It really won’t be anything new. The design language was initially introduced in 2022 and won’t change much, if at all, for the A18 model. That could mean we’ll see a different name than the iPad Neo, or that the existing name could stick around for a while until the base iPad model sees a major update.
