When Microsoft officially presented its next xbox codenamed console Propeller project Last month, details of its design shocked the gaming industry and community. Instead of building a traditional system, the company has decided to pursue the vision of a console-PC hybrid device with the convenience of the former and the versatility of the latter, complete with support for a windows desktop experience and clients like Steam.
It’s an incredibly ambitious concept and one that feels right at home with Microsoft’s cross-platform-focused strategy for Xbox that has been seen. Xbox Game Pass extended to PC, increasing distribution Play Xbox anywhere support, Xbox cloud gaming expansion and creation of the Xbox Ally gaming handheld.

At the time, it was crucial that “everything they could get” was available to be allocated to games running on consoles like Xbox and PlayStation, which is why Microsoft scrapped the idea of integrating more Windows functionality and opted to “give as much of the machine as possible to game developers.”
“Game developers desperately needed everything they could get, and that was ultimately the reason why (it didn’t work)… We talked to a lot of game developers while we were building Xbox,” Fries explained. “(It’s) the reason we did what we did, which was to move to something that was much more custom and had very little overhead as far as the operating system was concerned so that we could deliver as much of the machine as possible to the game developers.”
Now, however, he says, devices have much more memory than ever, making the original idea behind the Xbox viable and one that will finally become a reality with Project Helix.
“But now, you know… there’s a mind-boggling amount of memory on my phone, on my PC, whatever, you know? So, you know, even though we may still never have as much as we’d love to have, we still have a lot more than we had in the past. And so, it makes it possible to go back to thinking, ‘What if we could make a machine that was great for both of us?'”
It’s pretty fascinating to know that Project Helix is bringing the original vision of Xbox to life more than 25 years after the brand and the first console were created, and I’m excited to see how it turns out and how it revolutionizes the rest of the industry. Its planned release window of late 2027 or 2028 can’t come fast enough.
💬 Are you excited about Project Helix?
Microsoft’s upcoming new Xbox system, Project Helix, aims to combine the benefits and features of a console and a PC, which is incredibly ambitious and a type of device we’ve never seen before in the console market. Knowing that Microsoft originally wanted the first Xbox to be like this is fascinating and makes me hope that the company can finally achieve what it couldn’t 25 years ago.
Are you excited to get your hands on Project Helix? I’d love to hear from you, so let me know in the comments and be sure to vote in our poll too.
