Today is a busy day for Valve news. The creator of the Steam marketplace has now confirmed the Steam Controller price and release date. Although we didn’t get any information about the long-awaited Steam Machine, the company did offer an update on another highly anticipated product it is currently working on.
Steam Deck developer Pierre-Loup Griffais has said IGN that Valve is “working hard” on the next Steam Deck. When asked about the upcoming laptop PC, Griffais stated:
We’re working hard on it, and obviously every step of the way, if you look at our hardware projects over the years, you can draw a straight line from the original Steam Controller and Steam Machine to the Steam Deck, and everything we announced and released this year. And we expect Steam Deck 2 to be more or less the same, where a lot of what we’re doing here will be learnings that develop.
In 2023, Griffais confirmed that there would be a Steam Deck 2. However, he also said that the day of a next-gen Steam Deck may not come for a couple of years. At the time, the developer suggested that Valve would be interested in releasing Steam Deck 2 when there is a significant enough performance improvement that doesn’t come at the cost of battery life.
Unfortunately, it looks like Griffais is still unwilling to offer a firm date for when the next-gen Steam Deck might arrive. However, it seems that the company intends to launch a new laptop PC. Hopefully, it won’t be long before Valve finds the right balance between battery life and increased performance.
