Among what seems like an avalanche of bad news for Xbox right now, from The price of the console rises (again) and threat of study closureIt looks like GTA 6 pre-order sales data has become the next battleground that fans and publications are using to stick the knife in. There’s a particular social media post that IGN is sharing right now that indicates that, according to their affiliate data, PlayStation is outperforming Xbox in GTA 6 pre-orders by a ratio of 8 to 1.
Windows Central can confirm that we have received a statement from an Xbox spokesperson on this matter: “This does not represent pre-order data. We have had record orders. People should expect real data and not click on affiliate links.”
Why affiliate data is not reliable on its own
Through IGN Finds and the merchant affiliate linking program, data shows that PlayStation is outperforming Xbox by 8 to 1. Link in bio for more information on GTA’s effect on console sales. #IGNSummerOfGaminghttps://t.co/Hc8yYr0FQJ#IGNSummerOfGaming pic.twitter.com/TaKQS2RgxHJune 27, 2026
We live in an era where social media narratives often trump verified market reality, and to be clear, IGN does Indicate in the quote that it is based on data from your own community. But it’s worth noting that while PlayStation is likely getting more orders based on its share of the console market, no one knows the hard sales data yet, and relying on a website’s affiliate link programs to draw broad conclusions about the state of things is a shaky tactic.
But it IS one that is gaining traction as it is amplified by reports like this one from Viceand is generating significant participation. A commitment that will undoubtedly have also reached the general public outside the gaming sphere, as it is shared on Instagram, X and other platforms.
Affiliate programs track user traffic and clicks directed through specific retail links. Such data inherently reflects the specific demographics, regional biases, and purchasing habits of a single publication’s readers rather than being a mirror of overall industry performance. Treating click metrics as an indicator of platform health risks spreading misinformation, as can be seen in the current cycle regarding Grand Theft Auto 6 pre-orders.

An undoubtedly difficult time for Xbox
The talk right now comes against the backdrop of an incredibly volatile console market. There is a perfect storm of economic pressures, including the significant price increases that will come into effect August 1, 2026on Xbox consolesdriven by the global crisis in the supply of memory and storage components.
On a personal note, I have wondered why Xbox, during GTA 6 pre-order week, would choose this time to announce price increases. GTA 6 is the last major catalyst that will push many remaining Xbox One and PS4 users to the current generation, and both Microsoft and sony They should make the most of this. While Sony is likely to announce its own price increases, waiting until GTA 6 has been released could be a smart move to maintain goodwill with the general gaming public, allowing Xbox to take the brunt of the frustration during a critical sales window for both platforms.
XBOX is increasing the prices of its consoles starting August 1, 2026:• Series S 512GB: $399 ➡️ $499• Series S 1TB: $449 ➡️ $599 • Series X 1TB: $649 ➡️ $800• Series price of XBOX consoles will increase by US$100 for 512 GB models and… pic.twitter.com/weU6YlIDHeJune 25, 2026
However, by announcing these increases early, could Xbox really have ensured a wave of panic orders during Amazon Prime Week? If we looked at our own affiliate data, we saw significant click-through rates on Xbox Series X units discounted at Walmart and Target. But for the reasons I’ve already mentioned, basing a market analysis on that would be biased reporting. Our audience, already invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, is naturally attracted to Xbox hardware offerings; That doesn’t necessarily reflect the gaming community at large, right?

It is more important than ever for the gaming community to distinguish between anecdotal affiliate traffic and hard business data. As our Xbox contact pointed out, waiting for official full sales reports is the only way to assess the true state of the market. Until then, statistics derived from click-based affiliate programs should be seen for what they are: a measurement of outbound traffic from a specific website, not a reflection of the overall gaming situation.
