This PS2 emulator is optimized for your retro handheld

retro games in a portable console It’s a lot of fun, don’t get us wrong, but getting the perfect experience there can take a lot more effort than we always like. A big problem these devices often face is the balance between wanting to choose components that make the final product enjoyable and affordable, and being able to offer the kind of performance needed to handle increasingly demanding games. But now a new fork of the emulator has arrived to help us with some of our headaches in precisely that department.

we are talking about NetherSX2-Turnipa modified version of the popular NetherSX2 Emulator For the Sony PS2. While NetherSX2 is excellent, the main version so far lacks a way to easily employ Turnip drivers: custom third-party drivers that have been optimized for Adreno GPUs on Snapdragon chips.

NetherSX2-Turnip includes three of these drivers built in: one aimed at the Snapdragon 865 hardware, another for Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chips (including Elite), and another for all other Snapdragons. Perhaps the most important is the SD865 option, as it works with popular portable devices such as the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 despite the age of the chip.

If you felt like your Flip 2 or Pocket 5 just wasn’t up to the task of handling all the PS2 games you threw at it, this is certainly a version you’ll want to try. Turnip drivers may not produce superior performance with each game you try, but one very nice thing about NetherSX2-Turnip is that you can install it alongside the standard NetherSX2 and choose the one that works best for the particular game you want to play at the time.

When you first start NetherSX2-Turnip, if you find that it doesn’t live up to these performance promises, there are a few settings you might want to check in hopes of getting some extra frames or simply fixing graphical glitches. These include hardware download mode and mixing precision; check the advice in the GitHub project for tips on how to adjust them.
