Todoist is not the best task management app: this one does much more

I love trying out productivity apps, but it’s not often that I come across new gems. An app that impressed me with its diverse set of features has become my go-to task manager. It replaced Todoist and I won’t look back.

Lunatask goes beyond a task manager, and if you’re looking to jot down and manage multiple areas of your life in a single app, this might be what you’re looking for. Here’s what Lunatask offers and why you might want to try it.

Lunatask is the task management app that you are missing

It is the tool that replaced my Todoist app

I’ve tried more productivity and task management apps than I can count on two hands, and I rarely find many apps that I end up adding to my productivity folder. Lunatask (iPhone, Android) is one of my most recent finds and could simply be the task management app that replaces the one you’re using now.

As a long time user of apps like Todoist and tickingI love discovering promising new apps so I can use them alongside my go-to apps or even find a replacement if I feel like I want to change things up.

Everything you can do with Lunatask

A task manager that works in all scenarios.

Lunatask casts a wide net with its feature set, aiming to provide users with everything they may need to successfully manage their day (and life) across professional, social, personal and other tasks. This is what attracted me to the app and I soon found myself writing my entire life on it so I could keep an eye on what needed to be done.

Lunatask’s main features include a simple task manager that allows you to record tasks with various details, from date, time, and priority, to adding elements like a progress bar, task timer, remaining effort clock, and more. Tasks can then be set and assigned to custom goals (social, fitness, work, etc.) and also incorporated into your personal calendar. Lunatask’s time blocking feature is for scheduling, and once you create a task, you can plan it directly into your day by creating time blocks using drag gestures.

You can use Lunatask’s prominent note-taking tab to record your day or take notes and add elements such as tables, images, codes, links, quotes, and more. For more personal tasks, the app offers an in-app journal (which comes with a timeline and a “Happy Moments” entry option), mood/energy tracking, and progress tracking. For your personal relationships, Lunatask allows you to add relationships (you can choose from friends, family, and acquaintances) that you want to improve or track in a separate tab, which can even be useful for networking.

Why I prefer Lunatask

Powerful, easy to use and super adaptable

While Lunatask is designed as a one-stop app for managing your schedule and de-stressing, it’s not the only one: many productivity apps adapt this approach by offering multiple features that aid in your task management efforts. But after a month of using Lunatask regularly, there are a few things that made me find a permanent space for it in my productivity suite.

In addition to its comprehensive feature set, Lunatask also offers a clean interface that makes it easy to navigate between features. You can customize your to-do list to be minimal or comprehensive, and given how customizable the categorization of your tasks is (with goals and areas of life to help you better manage your life), managing your personal, professional, and social tasks and responsibilities feels tailor-made. Given the sleek interface, the app’s quick swipe and drag gestures also feel minimalist and native, so you don’t spend much time getting used to its features.

I like the calendar lock feature in particular as it integrates with task creation, allowing for an easy-to-use schedule builder. The addition of features like mood/energy trackers, journaling, and relationship management makes it feel super complete, going beyond just being a task manager and to-do list app. The app can be synced between devices and can also be used on Mac, Windows, and iPad.

Lunatask is set up in a way that allows for new features that fit neatly into its existing feature set, and I’m curious to see where the developers will go in the future.

It’s free, but there is a premium option.

Lunatask is free to download and use, and most of the core features are free. However, the productivity app offers a premium subscription option ($8/month or $72/year), which comes with additional features such as:

  • Unlimited access to “Areas of Life”, “Habits” and “Relationships”.

  • More trackers like weekly habits and stress

  • Calendar integration

  • Two additional techniques (the Eisenhower matrix and the must/should/want method)

For students and teachers, Lunatask’s premium features are available at a 50% discount. This subscription would be something to explore if you want to use Lunatask for work (with its calendar integration support), including tracking your meetings/video calls.

Don’t use productivity apps as an excuse to procrastinate

Many productivity apps can actually be counterproductivetaking up more time than saving it. To ensure you don’t fall into this trap, it’s best to find one (or just a few, depending on your needs) apps that you can use regularly to manage many aspects of your life in one place.
