He Obligations The franchise has had to walk a fine line in recent years, with a player base constantly pulling development teams in contradictory directions. Among the divisive issues is the annual rotation of maps.
The question of whether Call of Duty should launch with remastered maps from yesteryear or the number of maps that are regularly available dominates the conversation around a new release.
While last year Black ops 7 Released with a solid map rotation that included some remasters of nostalgic offerings from the past, this year’s Call of Duty title from Infinity Ward has foregone remastered maps in the launch strategy and is instead coming out the door with all-new, never-before-seen maps.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: multiplayer maps confirmed
Here are the confirmed maps coming to Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer at launch:
- Silkworm
- J92 reactor
- Roof
- Bombay
- Lithium
- Ammunition
- Coffins
- Nautical
- Lotus
- Sentinel
- Coal
- Transit 23
- Korean nuclear reactor (KNR)
- Block death
in a interview prior to the reveal of Modern Warfare 4Infinity Ward’s multiplayer team confirmed that many of the maps coming at launch were based on locations and events from the campaign. Specifically, the maps were approached as being “2 blocks” from the campaign events, with a separate fireteam engaging in combat parallel to the campaign events.
The first to come to life under that concept was Silkwormwhich, in combination with the upcoming map of a Korean coastal city, Lotus – gave the team the opportunity to generate rural and urban assets from South Korean cities that could be used logistically in both the campaign, multiplayer and DMZ.
During a previous press briefing, studio and multiplayer leaders spoke candidly about the map design process and the importance of making sure each map feels distinct, with its own personality and style.
The team emphasized the importance of clearer lines of sight, reduced visual clutter, and more intentional engagements to ensure players are engaging human opponents rather than fighting the environment.
However, a map is a hindrance to the game. Kill Block is specifically designed to be a dynamic map that changes with each round of a match. Studio Multiplayer’s creative director, Geoff Smith, was inspired to design Kill Block based on the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid. This unique stadium has a retractable pitch, allowing the playing field to be rotated to meet various event needs through a complicated underground system.
To create Kill Block, the team reimagined the battlefield as three separate slabs. The center slab is called the hero slab and serves as an anchor, but the Kill Block layout is updated during round-based matches. This random rotation ensures that no two matches are ever the same.
Smith has confirmed in a development record that the team has enough assets to potentially generate over 900 tile combinations for Kill Block. At launch, however, the team is aiming for 500 live combinations, with more to come after launch, including possible fallbacks to recognizable locations from previous Modern Warfare titles.
Kill Block’s imprint is the same as former fan favorite Shoot House. Based on the experience of playing it during an initial preview, the map scratched the itch for those of us looking for quick, risky showdowns and good old-fashioned chaos on small maps. Kill Block will support all major multiplayer modes at launch.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: multiplayer modes confirmed
Some game modes are meant to be in a Call of Duty title, but there’s always the chance that a new mode will also become a beloved addition to the rotation. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed to launch with the following modes:
- Team Deathmatch
- Domination
- hard point
- Confirmed death
- Counterattack
- Inflation
- Kidnap
- 10v10 Shootout
- party modes
- great war
- combat posts
- Frontal assault
Team Deathmatch, always a staple of the Call of Duty multiplayer playlist, is expected to return, but the team at Infinity Ward has taken a bit of creative liberty with spin-off mode TDM Inflation. Inflation will challenge teams of six players to eliminate each other, but with the added risk and reward of a bounty.
Eliminating a player drops cash on the ground, which can be picked up to add to the team’s account. Players carrying large amounts of cash become high-value targets for an additional challenge. The team with the most cash at the end of the match will win.
The popular Gunfight mode has also received some adjustments for Modern Warfare 4. Each match will be round-based and each player will be assigned a random loadout. But the randomization doesn’t end there. Gunfight 10v10 will pit two teams of ten players each on the new Kill Block map, which also randomizes each round. It’s as hectic as it sounds, but a warning to the run-and-gun crowd: think carefully or spend the entire match watching your teammates!
Following the first reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward has been surprisingly forthcoming with additional details about what players can expect during the game’s launch window.
However, there’s still a lot to learn as we wait for the game’s release on October 23rd. However, if you’re already sold on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 with the information already available, you can go ahead and pre-order both the Standard Edition and the Vault Edition now.
