Andy Serkis talked about his use of AI to digitally age characters in The Hunt for Gollum during a recent interview with Variety.

When you think about it, in the original. the lord of the rings movies, Peter created MASSIVE, which was a program that allowed thousands of orcs to have their own individual mentality. This is a shining example of an incredible use of AI. But we are not creating shots with AI in our film, each shot is created in a traditional way. One of the things I really wanted to do with this movie was bring back all the great filmmaking skills, from miniatures to prosthetics, and put them together, because that’s my taste. I like when you mix different cinematographic techniques.
