TL;DR
- Verizon has quietly updated its Unlimited Ultimate plan, increasing the price by about $5.
- The new plan is largely the same as before, although it adds Verizon Family Plus and Identity Secure as free benefits.
- For most users, we recommend sticking with your current plan unless you really need those (relatively specific) additional features.
While Verizon has become more aggressive with pricing recently, thanks to its basic unlimited 4-line plan for $100 a month, it hasn’t really changed its core plans much in a while. That changes today, since It looks like Verizon has quietly upgraded. your Unlimited Ultimate plan.
The new Unlimited Ultimate plan increases the price by $5, although existing Ultimate customers won’t see any changes here thanks to the existing 3-year fixed price. In addition to a price increase, the plan also adds Verizon Family Plus and Identity Secure as free benefits.
For those who don’t know, the first feature allows users to set limits, monitor screen time, get roadside assistance, and much more. This latest security feature provides a secure folder, social media monitoring, a password manager, and a few other security features.
The total value of these features is about $15 per month, which means you’re technically paying $10 less than you would if you added these features to the unlimited plan above. That said, none of these features are absolutely essential and there are cheaper alternatives.
We have seen this strategy from other large carriers recentlyso Verizon is far from alone here. Basically, the idea is to take basic plans, increase the price, and add a bunch of less important features so they can claim “better value”, ignoring the fact that most of their extras are cheap to implement and undesirable for a large portion of subscribers.
For those who don’t find these extra features useful, the new plan is pretty much the same as before, just at a higher price. Fortunately, there have been no other changes to Verizon’s flagship plans like Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Welcome, although that doesn’t mean Big Red doesn’t plan to make more changes in the near future.
Simply put, unless you really need Family Plus and Identity Security, we’ll stick with your current Verizon plan.
