Double Fine, acquired by Microsoft in June 2019, has maintained its creative independence, recently releasing titles such as Guardian and Oven. The studio has now taken to X (formerly Twitter) in response to a fan asking for a remake of the game that first put it on the map: Psychonauts.
First released in 2005, Psychonauts has become closely associated with Xbox following Microsoft’s acquisition of Double Fine and the release of Psychonauts 2 in 2021. On X, a fan reached out asking for a remake with the same art style as Psychonauts 2. a game that was well received by critics.

I wish there was more to follow, but in an era already filled with remakes, there isn’t. that It’s hard to imagine a future where the team updates Psychonauts for modern audiences. Given the cult following the series has, it would probably work well too.
I’ll admit, I only have vague memories of the first game, mainly watching my brother play it, but I do remember enjoying what I saw, so I’d definitely jump into a remake, if my backlog allowed, of course.

There are strong arguments for both, whether it’s revisiting a cult classic with modern visuals or continuing the story where Psychonauts 2 left off.
