Obligations: Modern Warfare 4 developers Infinity Ward revealed new information about the upcoming first-person shooter DMZ’s third dedicated mode ahead of the Xbox Gaming Showcase 2026part of this year Summer Games Festival activities.
The new mode will embrace the extraction shooter genre and add a new set of gameplay options to the franchise’s standard campaign and multiplayer offerings.
Four years ago, Infinity Ward launched its first attempt at a genre extraction mode with the initial DMZ Beta. The DMZ Beta was released for free as part of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and Warzone 2.0 bundle. The Infinity Ward team described the original DMZ beta as “a crazy experiment” that “It quickly became a testing ground and test bed… through seasonal updates and live experiments.“
Studio Multiplayer creative director for Infinity Ward, Geoff Smith, said watching the extraction shooter genre grow, as well as data from DMZ’s initial beta, helped the team learn what resonated with players and what the mode was missing in its initial state.
“All that knowledge and those actions became our foundation as we were shaping this new vision of DMZ from the ground up.” Smith said.
Infinity Ward’s new version of DMZ has been crafted with a rich story, crafted by the studio’s single-player narrative team, that picks up after the events of the Campaign and ties directly into the existing Modern Warfare universe and lore.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ – Hajin
The new extraction sandpit is located in the Korean city of Hajin, an area that has been affected by a nuclear reactor meltdown, creating a demilitarized and radiation-contaminated zone. Players will find Hajin marked with increasingly dangerous characteristics. AI threats, environmental puzzles, and narrative story missions that make the world feel more like a game within a game than just a third mode.
Before infiltrating Hajin, players begin at the DMZ Forward Operating Base, a hub for player progression where you can manage equipment, form squads, and prepare for combat. Each player is an unregistered asset working for the CIA, scouring the DMZ in search of military technology to capture and neutralize. But there are other rogue actors we should pay attention to.
DMZ’s Hajin map will launch with nine different points of interest:
- Hajj City
- Casino
- radioactive dust
- Hospital
- Military base
- farmland
- Prison
- Transmission
- City
Three different countries converge to create the DMZ map, Hajin, an outpost of South Korea that has been most affected by radiation, makes up the majority of the map, while parts of North Korea and Russia also lend themselves to the mode’s setting.
Hajin creates a living world for DMZ, where players can look to the sky to see air carriers moving cargo overhead or intercept convoys moving around the world, but it is also a living world that is affected by dynamic weather conditions.
Some infiltrators will drop you off in a Hajin that is bright and sunny, while others may leave you standing in the rain or obscure your vision with dense fog. The weather itself is not always harsh; It may intensify or lighten as your stay in Hajin progresses.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ: Progression and Gameplay
Before you can infiltrate Hajin, you must first choose what activities you want to experience while in the DMZ. Players can choose between Story Missions, Dynamic Missions, or Free Roam when loading into the zone.
Infinity Ward has shared that the story missions for the DMZ were designed by the Modern Warfare 4 single-player team and were based on the world experienced by players in the campaign. Dynamic Missions give teams a randomized checklist of activities to explore while in the DMZ, while Free Roam leaves players free to find their own activities.
Those who are in the queue without a full team, but have a full team, will be matched with players who are in the queue for the same tasks. For example, if you have a party of three and are looking to play a story mission while in the DMZ, the random player added to complete your team will also be someone who was looking to join for a story mission, minimizing the risk of your random squadmates leaving you hanging if they don’t want to play the same tasks as your party.
However, not all DMZ players will perform the same mission as your squad. You may have signed up to play freely, but you may encounter other players who are trying to complete story missions. The DMZ operates under the premise of “Same World, Same Time”, where squads are grouped by tasks, but the world itself is populated with players who have a variety of objectives.
Members of the Infinity Ward team described the studio’s philosophy for DMZ as “You push and the world moves back..” Players will encounter various convoys and air traffic that can pose challenges to their squads, but only if they are willing to take them on. Infinity Ward has incorporated stealth mechanics that can serve as ‘kill switches’ for triggered events, giving the player the opportunity to escape roaming encounters.
However, it is more difficult to escape from confrontations with other players. As players move up the food chain, achieve player kills, and make a name for themselves on the DMZ leaderboards, they may become subject to rewards. Players with rewards drop a dog tag that can be redeemed from the DMZ for a reward. Would-be bounty hunters can pay for information on marked operators within their match, similar to how past bounty plays developed in Call of Duty: Warzone.
Fans of standard Call of Duty multiplayer might be wondering what’s the deal with having a bounty in the DMZ, and the answer brings us to player progression in the zone. Unlike multiplayer or revival modes, where spawning is free and virtually unlimited, player progress in the DMZ is tied to operators similar to Black Ops 7’s Endgame progression system.
Each Operator has a set skill tree that players can unlock based on their own preferences, and players can have multiple Operators to experience a variety of play styles. Operator death in the DMZ is semi-permanent: Downed Operators lose their current gear within the DMZ, and after the match, the downed Operator becomes missing. Based on the unlocked traits of those operators and the player’s statistics, a cash value is assigned to that operator that the player must pay if they want to recover it from its demise.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ progression is dedicated to DMZ mode and is not affected by gameplay in other Call of Duty modes.
