If you have ever created an avatar for your WhatsApp profile, you should know that the feature will be removed completely.
Avatars are being removed from WhatsApp’s list of features, starting with the ability to edit. The news is courtesy of WABetaInfowhich notes that users see a new information card in the WhatsApp app with a notice of Meta deletion. The card also explains that avatars will be removed from WhatsApp profiles in an upcoming update.

Thumbnail versions of WhatsApp users have been around since late 2022, but Meta’s recent notice would indicate that the feature will not be prioritized in the future. WhatsApp profiles typically display profile photos first, with an avatar accessible if the user has one created. The feature was a product of Meta’s push for virtual reality visuals, mirroring the avatars available to Quest users.
The feature was also extended to stickers. These will be removed in addition to profile avatars, but the timing is unclear. Meta has not revealed the full timeline for the feature’s removal, but it has been reported that many users are seeing the warning in the app. When the complete removal occurs, users will not be able to create, edit, or share avatars with others.
Beyond avatars, WhatsApp profile pictures do not appear to be affected.
