WhatsApp username reservations are now being implemented
Starting today, WhatsApp is rolling out username reservations, and users will receive an in-app notification when the option is available to them in Settings > Account > Username.
With support for usernames, WhatsApp users will be able to message new people and companies or join group chats without necessarily revealing their phone numbers. The company notes that while the feature will be optional, usernames add an extra layer of privacy by giving users greater control over who can see their number.
Despite recommending that users choose a username known only to the people they want to hear from, WhatsApp says it is opening reservations ahead of the feature’s launch because, with more than three billion users, many people are likely to want the same names.
In addition to allowing users to create unique usernames that don’t necessarily match their names on other social apps, WhatsApp has created a complaints system for creators, small businesses, and organizations looking to maintain a consistent online presence. It will allow these accounts to claim the same username they already use on Instagram or Facebook.
WhatsApp says there will be no directory to search for users by username, nor a recommendation system. Usernames are intended to remain private, and the announcement emphasizes that “people will need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time.”
And for an extra layer of protection, users will be able to create an optional username key that others will need before contacting them for the first time:
The company says that while reservations begin rolling out today, usernames will gradually become available over the next few months, and users will receive an in-app notification once the feature is available in their country.
