Microsoft released a slew of Windows Insider Builds last night, continuing a trend of non-Friday releases. The tech giant says it is “Working to get all flights back on track.” But in the meantime, we have several updates and improvements to look at.
Latest Windows Insider Builds
In total, Five different updates were sent to Windows Insiders..
Because of how the Windows Insider Program renewed is structured, Many of the changes seen in the most recent versions have already entered testing for certain users.. But with so many build paths to keep track of, it’s easy to overlook some features or focus solely on what’s specifically shipped to your PC.
The most important changes will be implemented in Beta Channel Insiders in the form of Build 26220.8925. That update brings improvements to the touch panel, an update Start menuand welcome adjustments to File Explorer.
The update also improves accessibility and includes an updated Windows 11 Account Control drop-down menu.
Build 26220.8925: Changes and improvements
Touch panel
- We’re adding new gesture-related features to Precision Touchpads in Settings. These features should be widely available in all applications. The WinUI3 based UI requires new versions of WinAppSDK for full functionality and we are in the process of making the necessary changes to versions 1.8 and 2.0.
- Scroll and zoom speed: Control the base speed for these gestures.
- Accelerated scrolling: Repeated scrolling increases speed, allowing you to quickly scroll through long documents.
- This update brings a number of improvements to the Start menu as first described in the Make the taskbar and start more personal Blog Insider.
- Renowned Recommended to Recent on Home and on the Settings page.
- Added section level toggles to show or hide independently Fixed, Recentand All.
- Added the option to choose between a small and large Start menu, in addition to the Automatic (default) option that is already available.
- Added the option to hide your name and profile photo on Home.
- Redesigned the Start menu settings page.
File Explorer
- File sizes in the Details view now show the appropriate units (KB, MB, and GB) instead of just KB, making them easier to understand at a glance.
- Middle-clicking to open a folder in a new tab is now supported in the address bar and home page for a more consistent and efficient tabbed browsing experience in File Explorer.
- Improved screen reader announcements when resolving file conflicts during move and copy operations.
Narrator
- Braille displays now connect instantly to Narrator.
- We’re making refreshable braille displays easier to use on Windows. Narrator now supports displays that use the HID standard. If your display supports HID, connect it with USB and start reading without additional setup.
- For Bluetooth, pair your HID braille display on Settings > Bluetooth & devices like any other accessory, and then use it wirelessly.
- Compatible HID displays include the Orbit Reader 20, Orbit Slate 340, Freedom Scientific Focus 40, and APH Mantis Q40.
- HID braille displays now work during the Windows Initial Setup Experience (OOBE) over USB, meaning deafblind users can set up their PC independently of the first display.
- You can customize the braille input and output options in Settings > Accessibility > Narrator > Braille.
Account control
- The Windows 11 Account Control side menu has a modern, updated design and a clear subscription badge to make your account status instantly visible. This helps users identify their plan, discover benefits, and explore upgrades.
Windows Update
- Fixed an issue that could cause Recent Insider Flights to fail to install with error 0xc0000409.
Input
- Improved mouse cursor size persistence.
What I’m most excited about are the improvements to the touchpad. The updates will give you greater control over scrolling and zoom speed and make it easier to scroll through long documents.
Unlike some Windows 11 features, the touchpad updates should be available in a wide range of apps. Instead of having to wait for developers to make major rewrites or adopt a feature, you’ll have improvements at your fingertips quickly.
