The update will not introduce new features at launch and is expected to install with a single reboot on devices already running version 25H2 or 24H2. Previous versions, including Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows 10, will require a full feature update.
Microsoft has not announced an exact release date for version 26H2 and the release is expected to follow the same gradual process used for version 25H2.
Windows 11 26H2 vs 25H2: Same features, different upgrade paths
According to Windows Central, versions 25H2 and 26H2 are based on the same platform and share the same features. Version 26H2 uses build numbers of the 26300 series, while version 25H2 uses the 26200 series.
Despite the different build numbers, cumulative updates for both versions generally share the same KB number because they are based on the same core code.
Microsoft is expected to continue supporting both versions with the same features and improvements. The main goal of version 26H2 at release is to update the version number and extend the support lifecycle, rather than introducing new features.
The update process depends on the current version of Windows. Devices running version 25H2 or 24H2 will receive version 26H2 as an enablement package through Windows Update.
An enablement package is a small update that activates features already present but inactive in the operating system. This process only requires a single reboot.
Devices running version 23H2 or earlier will require a full feature update to upgrade to version 26H2. The same applies to Windows 10 devices. Windows 10-compatible systems will receive version 26H2 directly through Windows Update without needing to install previous feature updates first.

Devices currently running version 25H2 will be able to upgrade to version 26H2 without any hardware changes.

Expanded support with 26H2 and how to prepare
Since version 26H2 does not include new features, the main reason for installing it is to extend the support period of the device. Support for version 25H2 will continue until October 2027, with version 26H2 expected to add about another year, following Microsoft’s typical support window of 24 months for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education.
Version 24H2 will end support on October 13, 2026, so devices still running that version must update to a supported version before that date to continue receiving security updates.
For version 25H2 or 24H2 users who want the fastest upgrade path, it is best to wait for the enablement package to become available through Windows Update rather than using an ISO file. Users of version 23H2 or Windows 10 should check compatibility before upgrading as this will be a full feature update.
To prepare for the update, start by opening Settings, then go to System and select About to check your current version and build number. When the update begins rolling out in your region, open Settings, choose Windows Update, and check for updates.
It is advisable to back up important files before starting any feature update, especially if you are upgrading from version 23H2 or Windows 10.
