Zorin OS 18.1 Released with Windows App Detection Expansion as Downloads Surpass 3.3 Million


Zorin operating system has announced the release of version 18.1In addition to reaching a milestone of three point three million total downloads, six months after its initial release. The update expands the database used to detect Windows applications, introduces some improvements to the desktop, and updates preinstalled applications. A complementary update, Zorin Lite 17.3It is also available for older or lower spec hardware.

Zorin OS is a Linux-based operating system designed as an alternative to Windows and macOS, aimed at users switching from either platform.

Windows app detection expands to more than 240 apps

Zorin OS 18.1 has expanded its built-in database to detect Windows application installers to support more 240 applications. When a user runs a Windows executable, such as the Plex installer, the operating system displays a dialog box that suggests the most compatible installation method, usually the native version of Linux available in the App Store.

The system also automatically recommends native Linux alternatives for Windows-only applications. For example, throw Microsoft Outlook asks for a suggestion to use Evolution Mail instead. Developers say this feature offers personalized guidance for users switching from Windows, eliminating the need to do manual research on Linux equivalents.

Changes to the desktop and Zorin Lite 17.3

Zorin OS 18.1 introduces new options for its Advanced Window Tiling feature. When apps are selected, they now display their own indicator icons in the system tray panel. This allows users to check the status of apps or access features directly from the tray, without the need to open the full app window.

Zorin Lite, the lightweight edition optimized for older or lower-spec computers, has been updated to version 17.3. The update adds support for fingerprint readers, introduces new desktop themes, and introduces a redesigned File Manager app.

Zorin OS exceeds 3.3 million downloads

Zorin OS reached one million downloads after Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The number of downloads surpassed two million three months later with the release of Zorin OS 18. Currently, the total stands at 3.3 million after six months. Zorin OS has not provided a breakdown of download totals by region or version.
